Could the iPhone Google Voice Fiasco Help Android?
The issue here is that (currently) the iPhone is pretty much the most popular phone in the world, making it a very hot platform to develop for. Getting an application into the iPhone App Store means millions of potential customers. While Android currently doesn’t have the same numbers, it does have the possibility to have better numbers if a few high profile devices with some powerful hardware. Keep in mind also, that Motorola has latched on to Android with a furocious passion and they move a lot of handsets. Android has tremendous potential to take off, though it might take another year or two before it really becomes a force to be reckoned with. Continue reading
(UPDATED) Why AT&T is NOT Behind the Google Voice App Debacle
So, as you can see, using Google Voice on your iPhone requires the use of cellular minutes that come out of your celluar plan (unless the call comes in during your free minute periods, like nights/weekends). You still take the phone call through your cell phone so you use cell minutes. So there is zero competition from Google Voice on this front since it’s not a true VOIP (Voice Over IP) system. And, while Google Voice allows you to make international calls for cheap, you still have to pay for those minutes in your cell plane, you just won’t pay the international rates of your cell provider. State of Wireless in Linux Distros
There in lies the problem. Wireless is now an important part of computing. While my main concern is my desktop, none of the CDs I tried had my wireless working without major hoops on my work provided laptop either (Dell Latitude D830).
