Houston City Council Expands Indoor Smoking Ban

Let me begin by stating, I am a non-smoker.  My father has smoked most of his life to date and my wife is an ex-smoker as well.  I have several friends who smoke.  But I do not smoke cigarettes or anything else for that matter.  With all that though, it drives me completely nuts that cities have to imliment smoking bans.  Austin, Texas did it a couple of years back and today the city council of Houston expanded their own indoor smoking ban to include most bars.

Why does this annoy me so?  Well for starters, it puts a restrait on what businesses can allow in their establishments.  And bars are a place people goto with the expectation that they can smoke.  It annoys me that bans like this get passed because the public likes to complain too much.  “It’s too smokey at the bar”, the simple solution for a normal self thinking person is to not go to the bar.  But people instead would rather force their views on others and use the government to do it.  Now, I realize that this is somewhat hypocritical of me because I think abortion should not be legal except in a few very distinct cases but I realize that too, is somewhat wrong as well.

Personally I think that if the bar is too smokey for you, don’t go to the bar.  If the restraunt has a smoking section, ask to sit away from it.  What is so hard about this line of logic that people feel the need to legislate a legal activity to a point where the only place you can do it is at your own home?  It just does not make sense to me.

Building Your Digital Music Library (Part 1 of 2)

This article is part 1 of a 2 part series. Click here to read Part 2.

Digital music, it’s the wave of the future. More specifically it is very much the now of the digital era. Digital music files (mp3s, m4a, aac, oggs) can be played on computers, mp3 players, media devices, and even on home theater PCs. How many of the readers out there have a large CD collection? How many of those same readers only have a small part of their CD collection on their computer in a disorganized mess of files? If you are anything like some of the people I know, you probably are dealing with one of two options. Either you own a large CD collection that’s sitting on your bookshelf gathering dust or you have a large digital music collection that is anything but organized. About a year ago, I went through the process of converting my 650 CD collection into a digital music library and I learned a few things along the way. Over the course of a two part series of posts I am going to go over digital music and how to organize it. The first part (this post) is going to deal heavily with the ripping and encoding a CD collection into digital files. The second part will be dealing with the tagging and organization of those digital files. If you have already ripped your CD collection, I encourage you to read part one of this series anyway since it might cover something you did not already know.

And now on to the main event…

Battlestar Galactica

The more television I watch with my wife, April, the more I am bound to find good television. Our latest find is SciFi’s Battlestar Galactica. This remake of the classic 1970’s science fiction epic is everything good TV is. The writing is top notch, the acting is superb, and the photography direction is just plain awesome.

The show focuses on a a group of forty thousand humans that survived the nuclear destruction of the human race by the Cylons. The Cylons are the robotic artificial intelligence that humans had created who also later rebelled, commenced a war with the humans and then disappeared. The Battlestar Galactica is a ship from this first Cylon war and is on the verge of being decommissioned when Cylons attack the 12 human settlements, known as the 12 Colonies. Commander Adama, is in charge of the Galactica and commences to go to war with the Cylons. But after discovering a fleet of ships of the last remnant of the human race, he along with newly appointed President Laura Roslin decide that running away and looking for the lost 13th colony on Earth is the better option for the human race.

Through out the course of two seasons there are various struggles. These struggles range from political, military, and to personal. Every character is brought vividly to life by the writing and the back stories associated with them. But what really stood out to me was the various political and religious statements made through out the show. There is a lot of talk about religion in Battlestar Galactica, at least of a science fiction show. And the politics of the first two seasons have very familiar tones to our own (United States) government at the time. It’s almost as if the writers were using this show as a soapbox for some of their political and religious views, but they do it in such a way that one, it does not effect the flow of the show, and two if you are not paying attention you’d never notice it was there.

Battlestar Galactica, runs its viewers through a ton of various emotions and all within a few episodes. April and I watched the first 2 seasons on DVD, and doing so got us through the story up to now much faster but it also allowed us to see complete story arcs. This really ran us through a bunch of emotions and I can even admit to shedding a tear during a few scenes. The writers really work to make you feel for these characters and they succeed beyond any preset expectations.

Battlestar Galactica is good television and should be enjoyed by everyone.

Season DVD sets can be purchased via Amazon.com:
Season 1
Season 2.0 (Episodes 1-10)
Season 2.5 (Episodes 11-20)

Is DRM Really All That Bad?

Today, we live in a world where listening to music and watching video has become less of a right and more of a privilege. The advent of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology has done what content makers have been asking for since Napster went mainstream, the ability to control downloaded content. Why would anyone want to control downloaded content? Well that question is surely easy enough to answer. Just take a look at any technology news site and you are bound to find at least an article or two about someone being sue for downloading music or movies via a “peer to peer” file sharing network. Digital Rights Management has been around for a while now, but it was recently made more public with the success of the iTunes Music Store from Apple. A quick search on sites like Slashdot or Digg will tell you just how the typical geek feels about DRM technology but I will save you some valuable minutes and just let you know now, they mostly hate it. But is DRM technology really a bad thing? I think if used correctly and with the fewest restrictions possible DRM can, in the end, make (almost) everybody happy.

Blue Man Group

When it comes to concerts, I’ve seen a lot of them. I’ve seen Prince, Pushmonkey, Blue October, Korn, ZZ Top, and several others. If you were to ask me out of all the concerts I’ve seen, who has the best show, that answer has always been Prince. The man is just awesome to see live. No one, and I mean no one, can control a crowd like he can. No one has the stage presence he has, the authority over their band like he does. Even after Friday night’s concert by the Blue Man Group does my opinion of who puts on the best concert change. However, Blue Man Group gives Prince a good run for his money.

The show started off simple enough, the 3 guys dressed in all black with blue all over their faces come out and start banging on some pipes. About 15 minutes into the show the band kicks in and the show is on. The current concert tour is titled “How to Be A Megastar” and the whole “story” on the concert is based around this principle, including the faux infomercial that divides the show into various acts. The various rock movements tell the crowd what to do and what’s going on while at the same time we get to hear lessons from the “How to Be A Megastar” handbook talked about in the infomercial. Overall the concept is well done and since the guys in the Blue Man Group do not actually talk, the video and audio segments that lead the crowd and the group themselves only adds to the experience.

The thing that made the show very interesting was the use of text messages using what they were refering to as a “Mobkast”. The concept of the mobkast was the audience sent a text message to a certain number and then through out the show they were sent quiz questions along with “in the know” information about the show and the songs being preformed. In my opinion this added to the entertainment value of the show (it only cost $1.99 to sign up for the Mobkast so that it would not charge your phone for all the text messages) because you had to pay attention and there was a game to go with the show.

All in all, both my wife and I very much enjoyed the show and plan on taking our friends with us to the next one. If you have a chance to see this concert, I would encourage you to not hesitate in purchasing tickets.
