Houston City Council Expands Indoor Smoking Ban

Let me begin by stating, I am a non-smoker.  My father has smoked most of his life to date and my wife is an ex-smoker as well.  I have several friends who smoke.  But I do not smoke cigarettes or anything else for that matter.  With all that though, it drives me completely nuts that cities have to imliment smoking bans.  Austin, Texas did it a couple of years back and today the city council of Houston expanded their own indoor smoking ban to include most bars.

Why does this annoy me so?  Well for starters, it puts a restrait on what businesses can allow in their establishments.  And bars are a place people goto with the expectation that they can smoke.  It annoys me that bans like this get passed because the public likes to complain too much.  “It’s too smokey at the bar”, the simple solution for a normal self thinking person is to not go to the bar.  But people instead would rather force their views on others and use the government to do it.  Now, I realize that this is somewhat hypocritical of me because I think abortion should not be legal except in a few very distinct cases but I realize that too, is somewhat wrong as well.

Personally I think that if the bar is too smokey for you, don’t go to the bar.  If the restraunt has a smoking section, ask to sit away from it.  What is so hard about this line of logic that people feel the need to legislate a legal activity to a point where the only place you can do it is at your own home?  It just does not make sense to me.
