Going Back to ClamWin
A couple of days ago I had a nice dialog on my screen telling me that the free version of AVG Antivirus was being discontinued and that I would need to pay AVG some cash for the latest version of their software. I think that when it comes to antivirus software, you should not have to pay some of the outrageous prices that these companies ask for.
So, I went back to using ClamWin as of today. ClamWin is a great piece of antivirus software that is free. The downside is that it does not constantly scan your system as you use it. There is a program that utilizes ClamWin to keep a constant watch over your system called WinPooch but I have yet to install it and not bring my system to complete crawl.
I am asking my readers (few as they currently may be) if they know of a way for me to utilize ClamWin to constantly monitor my system and alert me of potential issues. If you know of way to do this, please leave a comment or email me.
WordPress 2.1
For those that are in the know, as well as for those that are not, WordPress 2.1 is in release candidate mode and currently has a estimated release date of January 22, this coming Monday.
WordPress is the technology that this website runs under and is hands down probably the best software to use for running a site such as this. The 2.1 version scheduled for release is the latest major upgrade version to the software since 2.0. There are several changes in this upgrade that will help in speed and stability.
I have started a private development version of Almost, Not Yet so I can test WordPress 2.1 to see if there is any breakage. I will upgrade to WordPress 2.1 as soon as I can work all the kinks out of the beta site I have set up. I would like to be able to upgrade without losing any current functionality and pages.
I’ll post another announcement once Almost, Not Yet has been upgraded.

Telecommuting and Kids
Like most bloggers, I have a day job. A nine to fiver that pays the bills. Because my boss is cool, I am allowed to telecommute on regular basis. Telecommuting is great, I save on gas and my office is right down the hall. The downside to telecommuting is that my daughter does not understand that daddy is at home, but daddy can not play right now. I love my daughter to death and would love nothing more than to play with her all day, but if I do not show solid productivity I can lose the telecommuting privileges.
So how does one handle this issue effectively without completely turning your kids away. Fortunately the Web Worker Daily has an excellent article on just this issue. Some great tips from how to handle the door to your office, explaining the situation to your customers, and making it your children’s office too.

Security Now?
Like most geeks out there, I have parents. I also have a wife and non-techie friends. Also, like most geeks when it comes to broken computers, viruses, and misbehaving applications, I am at the top of the call list for these people. It has taken me 6 months to convince my wife to use a password safe on her computer for her logins to her bank and credit card websites and at the same time I convinced her to utilize the “Generate Password” button in her password safe software. I have tried to convince my parents and non-tech friends to do the same thing. I have also explained the benefits of utilizing GnuPG to digitally sign and/or encrypt their email. In almost all instances this line of discussion ends with them looking at me with a blank stare on their face saying one of two things: “Why go through all the trouble?” or “I just don’t care that much.”
