AVG Still Free

A few weeks ago, I wrote that I had moved back to using ClamWin as my antivirus of choice because AVG was no longer offering a free version of their antivirus software. A couple people have written in to correct me on this, pointing me to this document.

It turns out that the free version of AVG that I was using (version 7.1) was simply being discontinued and version 7.5 was taking its place. There is a free version of AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.

I would like to thank both Marc and Kirk for pointing this out.

The Dark Tower

When it comes to beginning a story, the opening line is everything. In Stephan King’s Dark Tower series The Gunslinger opens as follows:

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed"

There are no words that have stuck with me long after finishing the story than those. Roland’s tale seems to end after two decades and 7 books. But that was before Marvel Comics got their hands on the series. Now a gorgeous comic book, the land of Midworld lives on. With Robin Furth helming the writing duties, this promises to keep the world alive and kicking well beyond King’s novels. Which for us, is a good thing.

Having just finished reading the first issue of this new comic book series, I can say without a doubt that we are in for some good times with this title. Robin Furth, does an excellent job of capturing the essence of King’s characters and brings them to life with both his own words and those of King. Sure, I’ve read this before, but seeing it in all its magnificence really adds to the experience. I am very excited.

If you have yet to read the Dark Tower series by King, you need not fear. Picking up this comic title will not ruin anything for you. In fact, I encourage new readers to read the original series (or listen to it in audiobook format) as they pick up new issues of this comic on a month to month basis. If you read at least one of the books a month you will be done just as the first story arc of the comic finishes up.

The first story arc of the comic will focus on the flashback sequence from the series’ fourth book, The Wizard and Glass. The first adventure of Roland and his first ka-tet. It is also the point in Roland’s life where he sees his destiny, the dark tower. A great way to introduce people to Roland. After that, where the comic book goes is anyone’s guess, but I would be lying to you if I didn’t say that I expect it to be a wonderful journey.

Wireless Security

There was once a time when wireless networks were a rare thing. Only the uber-geeks own them and the idea of a high speed internet provider installing them into homes was unheard of. This is not the case today. These days, everyone has a wireless network of some kind in their house. Cable companies and DSL providers install them into customers’ houses on a daily basis. Most of these installs are being done with security implemented but a lot of people either uninstall the security settings or leave them at the very basic levels. Most of the time they are only interested in what makes their life easier. This can be very dangerous.

For this week’s technology article, we are going to look at securing a wireless network. We are going to look at various ways to do this. We will go over some easy ways to secure it as well as some of the more difficult methods. So lets get into the why.

Wal-Mart Enters Online Video Download Market

Wal-Mart, everyone’s favorite (or not so favorite) retailer has launched their movie download store. Decent pricing is the name of the game here with older movies starting at around $7 and TV Shows at just under $2. The upside is that Wal-Mart has managed to land a deal with most of the movie studios so their selection beats iTunes by a mile.

The downside is that the downloads do not currently (and probably never will) work with iPods which has, probably, the largest market share of any portable media player. This also means that I will not be purchasing movies from Wal-Marts download store. Looks like it is still hours of ripping and encoding for me.
