Best Away Message Ever

A friend of mine had this as their away message on AIM.  Imagine the  Budweiser “Real Men of Genius” music being played behind it for maximum effect:

Today I salute you, Mr. Compulsive Away Message Checker. While most people are out actually having life in college or at least being productive, you are at home reading about it on your computer screen. Right mouse click, Get Buddy Info, or the little box at the bottom of the Buddy List (whichever is faster). You have people on that list you haven’t talked to in years, but you still loyally read their away messages every day to see what they are up to (borderline stalking). So, crack open an ice cold budwieser, Marauder of the Mousepad and don’t wander too far from your computer because you never know when someone’s away message may change…

Dems Win House, Senate Still in Limbo

Looks like the Democrats won the House.  I can not say I’m totally surprised but, I really wish that had not happened.  The Senate on the other hand is still undecided with CNN and FoxNews both having it be about dead even.  The states we are waiting on are Virginia and Montana.  Here’s hoping that the republicans can maintain control of the Senate.
Good news is, Texas stayed pretty much a republican state this time around.

Backing Up Your Digital Music Collection

A couple of weeks ago we finished our series on building a digital music library from CDs you already own. By now, you have probably amassed a nice size music library on your computer. If this is the case you might be wonder how you should back it all up. Backing up your music collection is very important mainly because you really do not want to go through all the time and effort it took to rip and organize them again. So what are you options when backing up that digital music collection you’ve built? Lets look at a nifty little option available from Mp3Tunes.com.

Voted

Today I did my civic duty and I voted.  It seems everyone went to the electronic voting machines this year.  Can’t say I totally like that idea.  I know that might sound weird coming from a person who is usually so pro-technology, but there is just too much room for error in those systems that it freaks me out.  If the republicans win (which is the side I voted for BTW), I think people will chalk it up to a huge conspiracy theory about how they hacked the electronic voting machines.

To have electronic voting machines without the paper backup to me is just not solid enough of a system to feel okay.  I also think that the software and compiler for the electronic voting machines should be open sourced so that everyone can see the source code.  The way it stands right now, a single company holds the software under lock and key.  They decide if it is ok and up to snuff.  This is not okay with me.  If the software was open sourced, then anyone could see it, and see that it has not been tampered with.

But if you have not voted, you are of age, and the polls are still open in your area, please get out there and vote.

The Importance of Creative Commons

Copyright law in its current state is atrocious. It is outdated, complex, and extremely difficult for the average person to understand with any real depth. There are aspects of copyright law like “fair use” and “public domain” that seem easy to understand but with recent changes as well as forth coming changes, the simple sides of the current copyright laws are difficult for people to grasp and understand. But copyright is important. Especially in this world of blogs and “made at home” content. With everyone release some kind of content, the idea of copyright and the rights to give others over your creation is not only extremely important but a necessity. This is where the comes in. What is the Creative Commons? Well, for starts it is a simple way for people creating content to license that content in the exact manner they would like. While Creative Commons does not replace the current copyright laws (in fact it works within said laws) its importance in today’s society is just as important. Over the next little bit I hope to show you how the Creative Commons licenses are important to you, me, and to anyone creating content. This article discusses current United States copyright law and the Creative Commons for use within the United States so some facts and points may vary based upon your location in the world.
