Beryl Issues Worked Out (Possibly)

While I was preforming my morning checks on the internet (calendar, email, bank account, etc), my GUI did it’s normal freezing thing (which I have actually gotten to happen less). But before I could consider rebooting the box, it closed the Beryl window manager and reverted back to Metacity (the Gnome default window manager). SWEET! That is exactly what it should do.

So, hopefully this means that I’ve got the issues with Beryl worked out. I do not mind the occasional crash, but I hate having to reboot my PC because I can not even get to a terminal or tty to kill the process. I like the fact that it reverts back to another window manager, which means I can always switch back to Beryl later. Anytime I have to reboot my computer is definitely a “for the lose” situation.

I forgot to include where I got the help on the issue.  It seems that going to the source can be helpful,  I performed a few “tips” from the Beryl Wiki, in the Troubleshooting section.  Specifically running the following in a terminal window.

“beryl –indirect-rendering –strict-binding”

Apple Getting Ready to Offer Subscription Service?

The good folks over at Media Biz, seem to be in the know.  They just wrote a nice article on Apple readying a subscription service for its iTunes Store.

I have discussed my desire for iTunes to get a subscription service on here before.  So my opinion on this subjet is quite known (assuming you read this website of course).  However, I will restate it here just so you do not need to click a link.  I am all for iTunes getting a subscription service.  The ability to constantly try new music is quite attractive to me since I get bored listening to the same tunes over and over again.

The thing about subscription models is that they only work for certain type of people.  There are people like me, who want to try new music on a regular basis and they we want to try before we buy.  The other group are people who do not feel like ripping their very small music collection to the computer when they can just download and fill up their device for a small monthly fee.  Subscription services are not for everybody, hence the reason that a lot of other subscription based services have not done so well.

If Apple gets a subscription service, you can count me in when it comes time to sign up.

Songs & Such: Beyond Measure by Jeremy Camp

Praise and worship has a reputation for being cheesy and I as such, I do not like most praise and worship. I like people that do praise and worship music to take chances with the songs, change them up, try new things. If a someone who is doing praise and worship music can write original tunes that serve that purpose, then more power to them. Thankfully Jeremy Camp is one of those people. He flat out rocks at the right moments and can be mellow during the other moments. He knows when to do what style and makes it all work.

This week’s song is entitled “Beyond Measure” and it is from the album of the same title. It is a more mellow song, but that does not mean it is without its passion. This is one of those songs that hits me at my core and stays with me long after I have heard the tune. It is a song of thankfulness about all that one has in life and how that is more then we should be allowed. It is a song about grace as well in that we are “given more than beyond measure” in our lives, most of the time. Continue reading

A Great Ubuntu Review

I just found this great review of the Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Beta over on Digg.  This review is a great look at both how far Linux has come and how far it still needs to go.

The reviewer takes a what “just works” look at Ubuntu for him.  And while he does some things that most normal users might not do, it still shows some stuff that needs work.  Lets face it, Windows has a leap on Linux and as a result a lot of things “just work” in Windows.

Great review though.
