Now, one thing that Mr. Asay seems to either a) forget or b) fail to recognize is that the concept of rapid application development (RAD), was pretty much completely non-existent on Linux prior to the Mono stack. Engineering a .Net solution for Linux desktops, Miguel and the rest of the Mono team has successfully brought RAD to Linux in a big way. Several of the more popular Gnome applications are Mono based (Banshee, Tomboy, and Beagle). Continue reading

Securing Your Digital World: Encryption (Part 1)

Lets review real quick. Passwords, check. Secure passwords, check. Preventing phishing, check. So by now you are secure right? Probably not completely. Here is a real quick question. Are you sending emails? Are you sending those emails via encrypted means? If no, then anyone can read your email. If you did not know, I will tell you now, emails are sent in clear text. That means that anyone who packet sniffs a network that your email is flying across, can read that email. Same is true for most instant messaging applications. Your messages are sent out in the open and anyone with the correct software can read them as if they were the one sending them. Continue reading

New Zunes

Last week, Microsoft announced the latest generation of their Zune media players. While the devices themselves are nothing to quickly write home about, one thing definitely was. One fact stood out above all the rest in the announcement of the new Zunes, and that was the fact that the original 30GB Zunes will get a software update that gives them all the new features of the newest generation. So the original Zunes will have podcasting support, as well as support for the updated video codecs. Continue reading
