iTunes/iPod Tips & Tricks: iTunes Automatic Organization

Over the course of the last few weeks, we have looked at some of the track specific options for your music in iTunes. Now we are going to look at something that can make your life really easy if you want it to. That is the option for “Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized” inside the Preferences under the Advanced tab.

A quick note to those that like to organize their files a certain way, this feature will rename your files and organize them in a way that iTunes likes. If you prefer your own method of organization, then you will not want to use this option.

When turning on the option to keep the iTunes music folder organized, you are instruction iTunes to rename the physical files located on your hard drive and arrange them in a directory structure for you.  This means that you do not need to go through the hassle of keeping your music folder organize.  Also if you combine this option with another option labeled, “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library” (found just under the “Keep Organized” option) then any new files that you add to your iTunes library will be copied into the folder and organized accordingly.

This allows you to keep all the music on your computer in one location which helps when keeping the data on your hard drive(s) organized.

This concludes this series on our iTunes/iPod tips and tricks.    I hope you were able to learn a few things, if you feel I might have missed something, please feel free to leave a comment, or email me.  I am always looking for ways to improve this website for your benefit.
