Getting Hung Up on the Apple-Microsoft War

I just read this post by David Pogue. It’s about the Apple-Microsoft war for market share of their respective operating systems. The thing I liked about this article was that it wasn’t about why one was better than the other, but rather why Windows has the market share it has and where Mac’s are gaining their share from.

Personally, I’m a PC guy, have been for a long time. And I get the usual requests from family members to fix their computers. When it came time for my mother-in-law to get a computer, I told her to get a iBook (this is during the pre-MacBook days) because I knew I wasn’t going to have to do a lot of fixing on it. To be completely honest, I had to show her how to connect to the wireless network I set up in their house and I haven’t touched the thing since. The reason I had to show her how to connect to the wireless network was because when I set it up, I set it up to not broadcast the SSID, and since the iBook couldn’t see it, it couldn’t connect to it. Once the SSID was entered it worked perfectly.

Each system has their advantages and disadvantages. And each is good for it’s own purpose. So to each their own and all that jazz.
